Choral Evensong
Did you know that, whilst church attendances in England are generally in decline, the one service which is bucking the trend is Choral Evensong? It is now not uncommon for the larger cathedrals to have congregations measuring several hundred at Choral Evensong, but research shows that many smaller parish churches are also experiencing increased numbers at this service. St James’ appears to be one of them!
Choral Evensong is a contemplative service where you can listen to fine music, well-sung, and be uplifted by the glorious use of the English language in the Book of Common Prayer. Coming at the end of the day, the service helps one to feel peaceful and to be reflective. Increased attendances show that this fulfils many people’s spiritual needs.
There could be an additional factor – a new website called choralevensong.org which enables anyone to locate a service of Choral Evensong near them. St James’ is registered on that site. Choral Evensong at St James' church is held on the second Sunday in every month, at 6.30pm.
Our picture shows the choir after singing Evensong at Gloucester Cathedral. We are always looking to increase our membership. If you love singing in the English choral tradition, and are interested in joining us, do contact me to try us out at a few practices (Wednesdays at 7.15).
